British Horse Society

The British Horse Society was founded in 1947 with the amalgamation of two organisations – the Institute of the Horse and Pony Club, and the National Horse Association of Great Britain. The BHS is a registered charity – number 210504 – and its activities are overseen by the Charity Commissioners. The Patron of the Society is Her Majesty The Queen. The Society’s primary objectives, as published in the Memorandum of Association and amended by way of a Special Resolution of the Society passed on 23rd June 2006, are:

  1. To promote and advance the education, training and safety of the public in all matters relating to the horse;
  2. To promote the use, breeding, well-being, safety, environment, health and management of the horse for the public benefit;
  3. To promote community participation in healthy recreation involving the horse.
  4. To promote and facilitate the prevention of cruelty, neglect or harm to horses and to promote the relief, safety, sanctuary, rescue and welfare of horses in need of care, attention and assistance;
  5. To promote and secure the provision, protection and preservation of rights of way and of access for ridden and driven horses over public roads, highways, footpaths, bridleways, carriageways, public paths and other land.

The BHS traineeship commenced in 2005 with two trainees Ciara Murphy and Louise Dunne. It began when these two trainees from the early school leaver programme wanted to pursue a career in the equine industry. They were the first trainees to go on work experience in the yard. It was felt at the time that they had both the talent and the ability to participate successfully on the internationally recognised BHS traineeship programme.

Ciara was the first trainee to complete her Stage One exams in 2005 and was soon followed by Louise. Both are currently working as instructors on the early school leavers programme. April Murray has just started her traineeship on the BHS programme. Here she talks about her experiences.

It was a privilege when I was chosen along with three other of my fellow students to start the new BHS course here in the Cherry Orchard Equine Centre. We were very lucky to have been chosen as there was only a select amount of places available around Ireland. After many months of waiting and many trips to Fas, we finally got the good news we’d been waiting for. We start at eight every morning, we first feed and hay the horses and turn them out to the fields. We then muck out the stables.

We ride everyday and sometimes help with the special needs which is a good experience. There’s a great atmosphere in the yard as we are all good friends which makes the experience much more enjoyable and it’s a brilliant place to work. We have lectures everyday and we learn a lot as we go along. I have really enjoyed my time on the course so far and look forward to the rest of my time ands am even looking forward to my exams. I would like to that Paula, Camila, Tanya, Elaine and Ruth for their lessons, lectures and hard work.

April Murray.
