This week, from Monday, October 6th to Sunday, October 12th, 2025, Cherry Orchard Equine Centre is proud to take part in Irish Road Safety Week (IRSW). As part of our ongoing Scrambler Initiative, we’re raising awareness about safe and responsible road use — not only for motorists, but also for e-scooter users, cyclists, and all road users in our community.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and this week we’re encouraging everyone to slow down, stay alert, and share the road safely.

E-Scooters: Know the Rules Before You Ride

E-scooters are a convenient and eco-friendly way to get around — but riders must know and follow the law. You have a duty of care to yourself and others when using the roads.

✅ Legal Requirements

E-scooters are restricted to:

  • A maximum unladen weight of 25 kg
  • A maximum design speed of 20 km/h
  • A maximum power of 400 W

E-scooters must have:

  • Front and rear lights
  • A bell or horn
  • Front and rear brakes

❌ E-scooters are not allowed:

  • On footpaths or motorways
  • To carry passengers or goods
  • To have a seat

👥 E-scooter users:

  • Must be over 16 years old
  • Cannot ride while intoxicated
  • May face a fine or court summons if they fail to follow road traffic laws

While personal protective equipment isn’t legally required, we strongly recommend wearing a helmet and high-visibility clothing for your own safety.

Cyclists: Be Seen, Be Safe

Cycling is a great way to stay active and travel sustainably — but it also comes with responsibilities. Every cyclist shares the road with others, and safety starts with awareness.

✅ Do’s for Cyclists:

  • Wear a helmet and high-visibility clothing
  • Use correct hand signals
  • Use cycle lanes where provided
  • Keep your bike roadworthy — check brakes and lights regularly
  • Be observant and think ahead
  • Be aware of blind spots on larger vehicles

❌ Don’ts for Cyclists:

  • Don’t cycle on footpaths
  • Don’t cycle while intoxicated
  • Don’t use headphones or your phone while cycling
  • Don’t cycle through red lights

Remember: If you can’t see a driver’s mirrors, they can’t see you.

At Cherry Orchard Equine Centre, through the Scrambler Initiative, we continue to work with young people and our wider community to promote respect, safety, and awareness on the roads. Whether you’re on two wheels, four, or walking — every choice you make affects others.

Let’s make this Irish Road Safety Week a reminder that safe roads start with us all.

📣 Join the conversation online — share your road safety tips and stories using the hashtag #CherryOrchardRoadSafety.

Together, we can make our community a safer place for everyone.
