Our recent day of carriage driving provided leaders with a fantastic opportunity to discover more about this exciting equestrian discipline, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience and demonstrations from some very experienced drivers and horses.

An Introduction to the Sport

The day began with a short presentation introducing the three phases of combined driving: dressage, marathon and obstacle driving (cones). The leaders were given an insight into what each phase involves and the skills required from both horse and driver.

This was followed by a selection of videos from the recent championships held at Punchestown, Co. Kildare, giving everyone a chance to see the sport at the highest level.

We were then delighted to hear from Emma Golding, who shared her experience and knowledge as a para driver. Emma has represented Ireland at multiple World Championships and spoke about her experiences competing with her horse, Mossy. Her insight provided an excellent perspective on the dedication, training and partnership required in carriage driving.

Getting Hands-On with the Equipment

We then moved to the yard, where the leaders were introduced to the equipment used for carriage driving and learned about the process of preparing a horse for driving.

From there, we headed into the indoor arena for a practical demonstration from Jim and his experienced cob, Blue. Jim demonstrated how he works with Blue and showed the leaders the basics of driving from the carriage.

The leaders then had the opportunity to take the reins themselves and drive Blue around the arena. This hands-on experience gave everyone a real appreciation of the communication between horse and driver, as well as the concentration and coordination needed to drive safely and effectively.

Meeting Harold and Brasil

After their experience with Blue, the group returned to the yard to meet Robert and Viki’s pair of carriage horses, Harold and Brazil.

Harold and Brazil, KWPN x Hackney crosses, are full brothers and they make an impressive pair. Robert and Viki talked the leaders through the process of harnessing and hitching a pair, explaining the equipment and the importance of ensuring that everything is correctly fitted and adjusted before the horses are put to the carriage.

They also shared their approach to training the horses. The pair began their basic training at three years old, before being given time to mature and develop. They were then gradually reintroduced to work at four years old, demonstrating the importance of allowing young horses sufficient time to develop both physically and mentally.

A Demonstration of Skill and Communication

The day finished with a fantastic demonstration from Robert and Viki with Harold and Brazil.

Driving a pair requires a high level of skill, precision teamwork and communication. The driver must work in partnership with both horses, maintaining control while guiding them through the course accurately and smoothly.

Robert and Viki demonstrated this beautifully as Harold and Brazil negotiated the obstacle course, successfully completing the course without knocking a single ball.

It was a brilliant demonstration of the training, trust and teamwork that goes into producing a successful driving combination.

A Great Day of Learning

The day provided our leaders with a wonderful introduction to the world of carriage driving. From learning about the different phases of combined driving and hearing about international competition, to getting hands-on experience with Blue and seeing Harold and Brazil in action, there was something for everyone.

It was an enjoyable and informative day that gave everyone a real insight into the skill, patience and partnership at the heart of carriage driving.
