Building Barbering Skills
Youth Employability Programme — 8 weeks of hands-on training and confidence

We’ve just wrapped up an amazing 8-week barbering course here at Cherry Orchard Youth Service—and what a journey it’s been!
Starting on March 7th, a group of enthusiastic young people came together every Friday morning to take part in a hands-on barbering program designed to build skills, confidence, and creativity. Each week brought something new, from learning the basics of hygiene and equipment, to mastering cutting techniques, blending, fading, tapering, and exploring the latest styles and trends.
What made the course so special was the practical, relaxed atmosphere. Participants had the chance to work on mannequins, try out styles on real models, and learn through video tutorials and live demonstrations.

The course ran over eight weeks, with each session focusing on a different aspect of the trade:
- Week 1: Introduction to barbering, hygiene practices, and an overview of equipment. The group also explored how to set up social media profiles to begin building a professional online presence.
- Week 2: Cutting techniques and styles were introduced, giving participants the foundation for more advanced skills.
- Week 3: Blow drying methods and product placement were covered, showing how to finish and style a cut effectively.
- Week 4: The group began learning fading and blending techniques, building confidence through guided, hands-on practice.
- Week 5: Taper cutting, thinning, feathering, and weight management techniques were explored in more depth.
- Week 6: Participants looked at current industry styles and trends, encouraging creativity and experimentation.
- Week 7: A highlight of the program—an interactive workshop at a local barbershop. This included a special crossover event with the youth club, offering a real-world insight into professional barbering.
- Week 8: The program wrapped up with our very own Open Barbershop, where participants showcased their skills and styled real clients in a supportive, community-based setting.
Each session was packed with energy, creativity, and learning. The use of live models and mannequins made the experience incredibly hands-on, while consistent video content and peer support kept everyone engaged.

As with all our programs, we’ll be celebrating the group’s achievements with a graduation event, which is planned for a separate date. We’ll be putting together a slideshow to highlight the journey and accomplishments of each participant—a moment we’re all looking forward to.
We’re so proud of everyone who took part. It’s been incredible to watch each participant grow in confidence and ability over the weeks.
A huge thank you to everyone who got involved, supported, and helped make this such a positive and memorable experience.
If you missed out this time, don’t worry—we’ve got more exciting opportunities on the way. Keep an eye on our socials for upcoming courses and events!
