Hydrogen Power, Big Wins: Our Journey with the H2GP Project
Cherry Orchard Youth Service STEAM GROUP
This year, our STEAM group got hands-on with renewable energy through the H2GP Hydrogen Sustainable Energy Project, and it’s been an amazing experience from start to finish.
What is the H2GP Project?
The H2GP Project is a hands-on STEM program that teaches young people how hydrogen can be used as clean energy. Instead of petrol or batteries, students learn how water can be turned into fuel that powers a small car.
How it works:
- Making Hydrogen from Water – Using a device called an electrolyzer, we split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
- Turning Hydrogen into Electricity – The hydrogen goes into a fuel cell, which creates electricity to power a motor.
- Powering a Vehicle – That electricity drives a small race car, and we can test how changes in design affect speed and performance.
- Learning Through Doing – Beyond building the car, we practice science, engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork — just like real engineers.
It’s an exciting way to see clean energy in action and understand the future of sustainable technology.
A Huge Achievement for Our Team
We are extremely proud of the Cherry Orchard Youth Service STEAM Group for reaching the National Finals of the H2GP Pro Hydrogen Sustainable Energy Project. This is a serious national achievement.
Our team will design and build a 1/10-scale radio-controlled vehicle powered by hydrogen produced from water, competing at the highest level alongside teams from across the country.
They are a credit to themselves, their families, and the wider Cherry Orchard community. Supported throughout by youth workers Laoise and Brendan, the group’s skill, commitment, and hard work have brought them this far, and the whole community stands firmly behind them.
