Hi, my name is Demi and I’ve been a leader here at Cherry Orchard Equine Centre for the past four years. It’s honestly been one of the best experiences for me.
Over that time, I’ve learned so much, not just about horses, but about myself too. I’ve become much more confident and responsible, especially when helping around the yard, working with the horses, and assisting with Pony Stars and Lead Rein lessons.
While being a leader, I completed my BHS Riding School Assistant Award. It taught me about horse care, safety, and how to properly assist during lessons. I learned how important it is to stay calm and organised, especially when you’re responsible for both riders and horses. This qualification also helped me secure a part-time summer job here at the centre, which was a great experience.
I also achieved my Bronze Gaisce Award as part of the Leader Programme. Both of these achievements helped me improve my life skills and grow in confidence.
We’ve been on educational trips to different colleges, such as Grennan and Kildalton. As a Leaving Cert student, it was really interesting to see the different options available. It made me realise there are many pathways you can take. We’ve also attended shows such as Treo Eile and HOYS.
One of my favourite things about being a leader is the friendships I’ve made. I love being part of a team and supporting each other. I also really enjoy spending time with the horses and seeing all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to prepare them for lessons and shows.
I’m also part of the Pony Club here at the equine centre. When exams are coming up, Leader Training is really helpful because I get lots of practice. I can focus on areas I’m less confident in, which makes me feel much more prepared when exam time comes around.
Overall, I really love being part of the Leader Programme. It has helped me grow as a person, learn new skills, and gain confidence. I’m so glad I joined and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
