Girls’ Snorkelling Programme
Success at Cherry Orchard Youth Service

We recently ran a free, 6-week snorkelling programme for girls aged 12–17, hosted by Trident SAC instructors and volunteers in partnership with Cherry Orchard Youth Service. This initiative was part of the “Her Moves” project, a joint programme by Diving Ireland and Sport Ireland, designed to encourage teenage girls to explore underwater activities, build confidence, and make new friends.
A huge thank you goes to Sharon at Dublin City Council Sports Partnership, Diving Ireland, and all the Trident SAC instructors who made this programme possible.
What the Participants Did
Over six weeks, participants learned the fundamentals of snorkelling through a combination of theory and practical sessions. The programme introduced them to the basics of underwater exploration and gave them the skills and confidence to enjoy Ireland’s coastline safely.

Key Skills and Lessons Covered
- Introduction to Snorkelling and Marine Life – learning about Ireland’s underwater environment and why snorkelling is such an enjoyable activity
- Snorkel Equipment Essentials – understanding and using snorkels, masks, fins, and other equipment correctly
- Snorkel Techniques – mastering breathing, floating, and movement underwater
- Hand Signals – learning key communication skills while underwater
- Science of Snorkelling – exploring how the body reacts underwater and safety considerations
- Snorkel Ailments – understanding common issues and how to prevent them
Participants were given structured, safe, and fun sessions delivered by trained and Garda-vetted instructors, ensuring everyone could learn at their own pace and enjoy the experience.
Why This Programme Matters
The “Her Moves” initiative aims to empower girls through adventure and sport, encouraging them to try new activities and grow in confidence. By learning to snorkel, participants gained not only practical skills but also an appreciation for marine life and teamwork.
We’re so proud of all the girls who took part and can’t wait to run future programmes to continue inspiring young people to explore the underwater world!
