Duration of course: 6 weeks.
Time allocated: 1 hour sessions.
Course: Pony Stars.
Number of participants: Maximum 6.



Week One:

  • Correctly fitted hat and boots to clients.
  • Discuss health & safety on the yard in relation to rider, horses and staff and suitable procedures.
  • Discuss horse & rider behaviour and awareness to give an understanding to the procedures of the yard.
  • Demonstrate how to approach a horse, fit a head collar and tie up the horse using the quick release knot.
  • Describe and demonstrate what each brush does, why we groom and how we groom.
  • All participant’s to individually demonstrate/discuss the task which they have learnt.

Week Two:

  • Discuss and locate the parts of a horse.
  • Discuss and locate the bones of a horse.
  • Compare the similarities of anatomy between horses and humans.
  • Play a label/sticker game.
  • All participant’s to individually demonstrate/discuss the task which they have learnt.

Week Three:

  • Learn the colours, markings and breeds of horses.
  • Discuss the differences between horses and ponies.
  • Describe how horses are measured in height.
  • Measure ourselves in horse height.
  • Demonstrate and discuss how to muck out/skip out a stable.
  • All participant’s to individually demonstrate/discuss the task which they have learnt.

Week Four:

  • Re-cap what we have learnt over the last three weeks.
  • Discuss what horses can and can’t eat.
  • Explain the rules of feeding.
  • Create a pony passport and treat our favourite pony.
  • All participant’s to individually demonstrate/discuss the task which they have learnt.

Week Five:

  • Label the points of tack on our saddle and bridle and explain their use.
  • Demonstrate and discuss how to correctly fit tack.
  • Discuss why correctly fitted tack is so important.
  • Demonstrate how to adjust the girth, measure stirrups and adjust stirrup length.
  • Demonstrate and discuss how to untack a horse and how to correctly carry the tack.
  • All participant’s to individually demonstrate/discuss the task which they have learnt.

Week Six:

  • Re-cap on how to correctly tack up.
  • Demonstrate how to lead and turn a horse in a correct safe way.
  • All participant’s to individually demonstrate/discuss the task which they have learnt.
  • Certificate of completion given out to participants.
